Certaldo was the perfect place to stay in Chianti region of Tuscany. It had a train station so we could make our own way around to explore and sightsee. When visiting towns without a train, we took a taxi (NCC). Several people we met had rented cars and they found the area to be very drivable. Certaldo Basso (lower town) and Certaldo Alto (up the hill) are connected by scenic, natural walking paths and for those who prefer something easier, the very quaint Funiculare (1.5 Euro return). We stayed in Certaldo Alto, the historic centre of town. In addition to the fascinating museums - do not miss the Nail Museum - there are B & B's , apartments, and a lovely hotel. There are wonderful dining spaces inside and outside, bars and the wonderful Gelateria! In terms of crowds, there were occasional groups of tourists in Certaldo Alto but many times we were the only people walking down the cobbled roads in the middle of the day. The peace and quiet was most welcome after the throngs of people in Florence and Siena. Certaldo is a very special place. nestled in the heart of Tuscany.

This Medieval Borgo ranks among the most important in Italy...
This Medieval Borgo ranks among the most important in Italy for its history and access to both Florence and Siena. Additionally, this town is the birthplace of Giovanni Boccaccio and his featured in his major literature piece, The Decameron.
The new part of town is accessible with simple 10 minutes walks or via a mini railway (for a charge of €1,50); but you can also drive, thanks to the host who will manage getting the required permits.
Certaldo is very small but it sits at the crossroad of major communication roads, therefore it's easy to access Siena, San Gimignano, Volterra, Florence, and even Pisa.

It's very pretty hilltop settlement but you can see everything in half an hour. The funicular is fun but a little restrictive if you need to leave early. There are some great restaurants. It's the ideal stop-off for lunch if you are traveling back to Pisa from further south in Tuscany but not a great base for wider exploration.

Certaldo is very beautiful! Go to see the old town.
Certaldo is very beautiful! Go to see the old town. There is enough space for parking near the funicolare, the transport up hill.
Certaldo is central for visiting Siena, San Gimignano, Volterra and Florence. And you'll be driving through the most romantic landscape.

We visited the old city of Certaldo in 2 hours.
We visited the old city of Certaldo in 2 hours. New part not much shopping or restaurants. Supermarket we visited as we had a kitchen and stayed 5km out. Close to other old towns worth visiting like Volterra.
We bought olive oil and wine from our accomodation which we loved.
This place was absolutely beautiful!! The scenery was everything you could imagine Tuscany to be! The property was very clean and comfortable. The staff were amazing!! So accommodating and just really nice and personable. We dealt a lot with Martin at the reception desk. But everyone is really wonderful!! Also take one of the wine tours. The sommelier was amazing!! Very easy to talk with but extremely knowledgeable. Obviously can not say enough about this place. You just have to experience it!!!
if you want the total Tuscany feel this is it, perched high on a hill overlooking the Tuscan hills, this small medieval town with cobblestone streets has everything you need, several restaurants and shops in the village, breakfast is served on the patio with gorgeous views...Keep in mind this building is old, rooms are small, No AC ...I would definitely recommend staying in the cooler months... Eric was amazing always there for whatever was needed and served us a great breakfast every morning
The location is amazing, on top on beautiful city. Right next to vernicula to get into the lower part of the town.
The host was able to accomodate free parking nearby for our rental car, a 2 minute walk from the hotel.
An amazing terrace to drink and watch the sunset.
Breakfast was basic but great for the price. The staff were kind and made amazing drinks and coffee!
Dinner at the restuarant was beautiful. Again, the views from the restuarant were beautiful.
We loved it all. An incredible view out of the window, a spotlessly clean and comfortable room, delicious breakfast every morning and the loveliest, most welcoming host in the world - Sasha!
We stayed there for 4 nights. We had a chance to explore the unique, authentic town of Certaldo and treat our palate to the delicious food at local restaurants kindly recommended by Sasha. We would go back without hesitation!
THANK YOU, SASHA! You are a STAR!
Everything was fine. We never met the host, as there was a self check-in, but he was always in touch providing all necessary information, and we did not feel neglected in our trip. Huge apartment, nice kitchen fully equipped, good beds. Certaldo is worth seeing by itself, and we had great daily trips around (San Gimignano, Siena, Florence are within one hour of reach by train). It was a nice stay for a short vacation.
Amazing property, spacious living space, beautiful view. So relaxing and peaceful. The host was so welcoming and accommodating. This was the perfect place to relax and unwind after a day out in Tuscany. Close to Certaldo where you can find many restaurants, grocery stores, etc.
Best location in Certaldo, an ideal starting point for trips to Pisa, Florence, Siena, San Gimigiano and other towns in Tuscany.
The friendliness of the owner, very good equipment and cleanliness. Close to good restaurants and bakeries with very good pastries for breakfast.
We loved to stay here for a few days in the old city of Certaldo Alto. Many thanks to the very friendly, helpful and responsive host Nicola. Parking nearby was included. Very spacious apartment and well equipped kitchen. Wonderful view from the terrace.
Lovely, quiet place. Great swimming pool. Very clean.
Staff very friendly, our plane departed late in afternoon, so they offered a late checkout. We wish to come back!
10-15 minutes by car to the village of Certaldo. Certaldo alto is beautiful!
Great location. We traveled to Certaldo Alto for my brother in law’s wedding. The location was great. The accommodation had everything we needed and more with a baby crib. I would recommend to anyone and would stay here again. Lovely place!
Location is superb, if travelling by car. In the morning, I opened the bedroom window and see the scenery of San Gimignano and Tuscany landscape. There is also very good restaurant in the Certaldo village with tasty local cuisine.
The charm of staying in a medieval building. We loved the decorating of the rooms. Everything was super clean. We loved being in the heart of Certaldo and right around the corner from a great restaurant that Sasha recommended.
The Views are great, very nice restaurants in close proximity. Location in between Sienna, Florence and the coast. Everything easy to reach. The roads are tiny but that is a given.
The wine is really good!
Located in Certaldo Alta, Tuscany this Hotel is a wonderful and quaint place to stay with a beautiful garden restaurant and situated just 25 meters from the Boccaccio Museum.
Great location and incredible views, beautiful and historic building, friendly and helpful staff. Starting the day with the hotel's breakfast was the best.
